Giro Chess

After observing many games of chess, multiple player traits stood out to us- players get fixated on certain portions of the board, typically where the most important pieces are or where the pieces are most densely grouped. This leads to missed opportunities, and foolish mistakes as the players lack a full sense of the board. Also, due to this happening, opposing players gain the advantage of being able to jump from one end of the board to the other taking out opposing pieces as gaps open up and go unnoticed. The game then becomes all the more disorganized as external distractions grab the player’s attention. To compensate for these traits, we motorized the board so that it slowly spins as you play, illuminated the sides, and added varying surface heights to the board- this not only helps to better draw the user’s attention to the board with the light and motions, it also enables the users to see the board from a different perspective with every move, allowing for more strategic and informed game play. Also, the varying tiles heights adds a subconscious level of strategy, as players can change an opponent’s perception of the importance of certain pieces, making them more noticeable or drawing attention away as necessary.
